Chapter Nine

“We take our friendships seriously,” Abbie added, wanting to be crystal clear about her expectations. “We expect loyalty, respect, and a generous spirit of cooperation. In return, we offer the same and our full protection.”

It was part of their SB code.

This time, when her guest met Abbie’s gaze, Hillier’s seemed filled with an unspoken hunger. “I don’t have such stalwart friends.”

“Is that because they’re all dead?” Talin asked.

A half-laugh slipped out of Robert, who had moved to stand behind Hillier.

“James,” Hillier said, “wait for me by the car.”

“But...” James began, as if ready to mount a vehement protest, but Hillier waved him off.

Once James left the room, they all remained silent until the front door opened and closed.

Robert vanished and reappeared, nodding to confirm that James wasn’t simply hiding nearby.

“I find your terms acceptable,” Hillier said. “So, Abbie and Talin, it shall be. You may call me Kiros.” Ignoring his cup of tea, he sat back. “How much have you learned about me?”

Abbie tossed in their opening salvo. “We suspect you might be involved in a bombing that occurred in London.”

Talin gave him the specifics—the money trail that led them to Kiros’s companies.

Their guest’s gaze went from Talin to Abbie. He then gestured a thumb to his back where Robert stood. “Why do you two keep looking over there?”

“Robert’s standing there,” Talin told Kiros, and Abbie instinctively slapped him using a pillow beside her.

Talin gave her a wounded look as if to say, “What did I do?”

Surely, it wasn’t necessary to spill all of their secrets to this man who had yet to share a single detail about himself?

Kiros grinned at Abbie’s reaction to Talin’s disarming honesty. “The Earl of Ashford. Of course, he would be here.”

“Why ‘of course?’” Abbie asked.

How could he even know about Robert? Their ghost had no financial or social media footprints.

Robert’s concerned frown at their guest suggested his thoughts ran along similar lines.

Kiros remained silent for a moment, staring morosely at his cooling cup of tea still resting on the coffee table. Unlike Talin, he was probably considering how much was safe to reveal.

“Do you know what I am?” Kiros finally asked.

“An immortal?” Talin replied in a mild tone.

Kiros’s gaze flew to him, his eyes wide and startled.

“Is that why you lack friends?” Abbie asked. “Because those you grew close to died?”

Killer or not, that was a sad existence.

“Over time, life becomes a slipstream,” Kiros whispered.

“Must be lonely.” Talin sounded sincerely sympathetic.

Kiros’s gaze softened on Talin. “Especially when you never know whom to trust. Or the one you trust betrays you.”

“Trust is earned,” Abbie said, “not gifted.” She desperately wanted to ask who betrayed him, but settled for a more pertinent question. “Why have you come here?”

“We had to meet eventually.” His gaze settled on her with resignation. “Once my tech team told me Talin was sniffing around my records, I decided that time had to be now. I realize you have suspicions about me from Talin’s explorations into my history, Abbie, but are you aware of who you are?”

If Kiros were the immortal, he would well know her family legacy.
